Indonesia Travel Guide: Islands, Temples, and Tropical Escapes

Indonesia is an island nation built for travelers. With thousands of islands to choose from, you can swim with manta rays, chase waterfalls, visit ancient temples, and end every day with a sunset on the beach. Bali is the crowd favorite — and the most searched (“Bali itinerary,” “where to stay in Ubud,” “Bali vs Nusa Penida”) — but Indonesia is much bigger than Bali. Java, Komodo, Flores, Lombok, and Raja Ampat all offer mind-blowing landscapes and culture.

Most first-timers base in Bali (Ubud for culture, Canggu/Uluwatu for beach life) and add a side trip to the Nusa Islands or the Gilis. Adventure travelers head to Yogyakarta for Borobudur and Prambanan, or to Labuan Bajo for Komodo National Park. Domestic flights and fast boats connect the main areas, and the tourism scene is very used to digital nomads, couples, and backpackers.
